AFRICAN GIRLS CONGRESS

The African Girls Congress (AGC), which is premised on a similar strategic approach as our MILEAD Fellows Program, is tailored for girls with leadership promise between the ages of 13 and 18 years from the region. A diverse cohort of 50 exceptional girls are selected for the year-long program that starts with a 10-day intensive residential training in Accra. The program provides a forum to engage and equip girls with critical leadership and interpersonal skills that will enable them to realize their fullest potential—intellectually, emotionally, and socially.

 The African Girls Congress Program seeks to:

(1) Prepare and support a new cadre of girls with leadership promise through holistic leadership development- personal, academic and career;

(2) Develop and enhance skills and experiences to enable girls to aspire and position themselves for future leadership roles at the community, national, and international level;

(3) Empower girls through the dissemination of relevant information about African women’s leadership and expose them to examples of positive leadership action, locally and globally;

(4) Get girls to be motivated about leadership and to aspire to fulfill their full potential;

(5) Nurture active citizenship and interest in community service- as girls engage and address critical issues of interest to them in their schools and communities; and

(6) Build solidarity by utilizing the experiences and achievements of influential women through mentoring and coaching.

One of the principal strengths of the African Girls Congress is the opportunity it provides for girls to make independent decisions, take responsibility and ownership, and initiate community change projects in collaboration with experienced and professional women to grow as leaders, committed to bringing change to their communities.
